Q. how do i find out what movies are available, both in the county and at a particular branch?

You can find out which DVDs the Library owns by searching in the catalog.  The catalog shows all locations that own a particular title.  If you want a browse list, one of the ways I do it, is to search by call number in the classic catalog:

brings up an alphabetical A-Z list of all the feature films (including television series) owned by Alameda County Library.

You can also search by title or even by actor.  For example if you want to know all the movies that the Library owns with Jack Nicholson, just do an author search under "Nicholson, Jack "and you will get a list.  The same thing is true of Directors -- for example, search Judd Apatow as an "author" and all his movies will come up.

The catalog shows exactly what the library owns and where the item is currently located.  Once you have on your screen, a title that you are interested in, if it's not on the shelf at your local library, you should go ahead and request it.  You will be notified when the DVD has arrived for you.

Audio books can work the same way: you can do a call number search on CDB FIC and get a list; OR you can search a favorite author, such as Stephen King and limit it to audiobooks.
