Q. How can I learn a foreign language such as French?

Alameda County libraries have a number of things that can help you with learning French or other languages. At Fremont Main there are books, cd's and DVDs upstairs on the second floor. All have a Dewey Decimal number between 440 and 449, and are shelved by number.

In addition, the Alameda County Library subscribes to some online resources that you have access to from home with your library card. One of them is Mango Languages.

To use Mango:

  • go to the library home page at http://www.aclibrary.org
  • Hover your cursor over the dark blue ribbon under the banner at the top where it says Research and click on A-Z Resources.
  • Choose the red tab at the top that has the letter M on it and then click on Mango Languages. You'll have to enter your library card number to get in.
  • Once in, you'll have to create a profile to use the courses. This is just a matter of giving them an email address and a password.
  • Then choose French and then you will see that there is a basic course plus a couple of more comprehensive ones, one of which starts at a more intermediate level rather than right at the beginning.

There is also a French 101 class in Universal Class. To use that, follow the first two steps described above, then shoose the tab with the U on it and then choose Universal Class. Again, you'll have to have your library card # to get access. Then:

  • register. this is a bit more involved that Mango, but you have access to an incredible array of classes on nearly everything imaginalbe, and not just languages.
  • From the navigation bar on the left, choose Language Arts, and then Language Studies. When I did this, I saw the French class "advertised" on the front page. but if you don't, use the search box to type in French and then you'll have the link to French 101.
